'Star Trek (2009)' textual analysis

Genre: Science Fiction/Action

Mise En Scene:
Setting- USS 'Kelvin' Federation Starship, Outer Space, 2233-04.
Costume- Futuristic Star Fleet uniform. Different coloured uniforms depending on rank of individual (blue= captain etc.)
Facial expressions and body language- stern, harsh looks from commander of 'Kelvin'.
Lighting- lots of yellows, blues and dull greys.

Camera:

  • Camera tracks along the moving starship to eventually reveal the entirety of it's form.
  • Camera follows the commander as he walks through the automatic doors and then pans around him to show his front before first diagetic dialogue is provided.
  • Camera zooms into commander as he sits down at his chair.
  • Camera pans 180 degrees from commander's shocked face to the enormous Romulan enemy starship coming through the black hole- a stunning thing for the crew of the USS Kelvin to see.
  • Fast paced camera shots displaying the full extent of the attack by the Romulan ship, Narada.
  • Camera follows the enemy missile as it separates and then rotates 180 degrees as it impacts the Star Fleet ship.
Sound:
  • Technological and computer-like sounds provided when viewing the USS Kelvin for the first time.
  • Off-screen diagetic friendly radio messages are heard as the ship approaches the spot in space where they have been sent.
  • Lots of explosive sounds, frantic shouts and screaming can be heard as the ship is struck by enemy missiles.
  •  All sound quietens as a crew member is sucked out into space. This effect gives the impression of space having no sound.
  • Off-screen yells ordering to get the crew ready to evacuate the ship.
  • Off-screen sound of doors opening as the commander enters the enemy spacecraft.
Editing:
  • Lots of clean cuts used, especially towards the end when footage from both spaceships is used to create a sense of suspense and tension.
  • Clever use of fading from black wall into next scene.
  • Lots of quick clean cuts of shots displaying the damage of the USS Kelvin- explosions and crew members in distress.
